KWPN 2011 Breeding Values Report

The KWPN recently released the 2011 Stallion Breeding Values--a statistically sound indicator of a stallion's influence as determined by the evaluation of his offspring at keurings in the Netherlands. Rousseau continues to be a stand out in his age group and show impressive results! He carries an overall 91% reliability for dressage and 94% reliability for both conformation and elastic movement. Highlights of Rousseau’s index include high reliability in producing an uphill neck position, a sloping shoulder, powerful impulsion at the trot and carrying balance at the trot. First Annual Breeders Challenge Sweepstakes Results.

bcs-winnerCongratulations to our first annual Breeders Challenge Sweepstakes winners!!! At Dressage at Devon, we announced that the Champion foal is "Royal Rousseau KIS" (Rousseau x Royal Prince x Banter). "Roy" was bred by Wendy and Marty Costello of Kent Island Sporthorses in Maryland. They win $5000 AND we've offered to purchase Roy for $20,000! Reserve Champion foal "Locket TF" was bred by Debbie Morrison of Transitions Farm in New Jersey. Locket TF (Locksley I x Sandro Hit x Fedor) earns her owner $2000! Each participant in our BCS will receive a $100 breeding credit for any stallion in our program. All entrants were scored "blindly" – no pedigree, owner information, gender of foal, or other detail was given to the judges – just the video and photo material that each owner submitted for their foal. Foals were judged on five categories: walk, trot, canter, conformation and overall impression. Judges were Scott Hassler in the U.S., Jacques Verkerk of Holland, and Ingo Pape of Germany. Each judge submitted their scores independently and once all scores were tallied, the Hassler Dressage office kept the results under wraps until our Tuesday evening lecture and party at Devon. Thanks to all who participated and BIG congrats again to our winners!

Endreson and Kemenosh at Gladstone Festival of Champions.

kya endresonWe couldn't be more proud of our 'quiet' working student from North Carolina, Kya Endreson! Kya blossomed this year, much thanks to the wonderful opportunity provided by her parents and Ann Sparks of Horses Unlimited. Last April, Kya got the ride on Horses Unlimited's successful Hanoverian stallion Pik L and what a ride it was! Over the weekend of September 10-11, Kya and Pik L took the competition by storm at the Festival of Champions, kya endresonsecuring the Championship title of the FEI Junior division with a clean sweep scoring 70% and better in both performances. Kya had held the lead as our country's top Junior all season; it was wonderful to watch her confidence, composure, and competence grow with each competition and to see her and her partner Pik L peak just in time for Nationals. We look forward to supporting Kya and Pik L for their final 2011 appearance at Dressage At Devon later this month!

We also applaud our FEI Young Rider Jill Kemenosh not only for her beautiful performances and partnership with her Dutch gelding Nelzon but also her notable composure and sportsmanship. Jill and Nelzon found themselves in the unfortunate position for the fourth year in a row to go FIRST in their division at Festival of Champions. Undaunted, Jill put in a fabulous ride at Festival on Friday, the first day of competition. She set a high standard with a 67+% and a wonderful performance and finished 3rd for the day. A bit tired for the finals, Jill and her long-time mount Nelzon finished 6th overall. No stranger the Festival of Champions, Jill placed 3rd in the FEI Young Rider division last year and 6th the year before; this was Jill's final year as an FEI Young Rider and we congratulate for all her years of success! Jill commented that she was 'happy for the privilege to compete once again at the Nationals' and she is looking forward to moving on to other challenges! Jill is in her 3rd year at the University of Delaware, where she is a Communications major.

Rousseau's Topas Wins Young Horse Trials.

At the 2011 CDN in Husterlo, Belgium, a trial for the World Young Horse Championships which are held annually in Verden, Germany, a Rousseau son was top of the leader board in the 6 year old division. "Rousseau's Topas" (Rousseau - Rohdiamant - Karon) ridden by new owner, Simon Missiaen, scored 72.114 points. Simon purchased Rousseau's Topas through the 2011 Oldenburg Spring Elite Auction in Vechta, Germany in April of this year. Rousseau's Topas was the third highest sale at the auction for 130,000 euros. Quoted by Simon to Eurodressage in May: "Our long term goal is to ride Grand Prix at international level but I could only dream of him going so well in the young horse classes. We only went to competitions to get to know each other. Topas is very rideable in the show ring and he's always good in the contact with the bit and stays uphill. This was our second competition and of course it would be nice to represent Belgium in Verden, but there are still many selection trials to come and there is strong competition. Grand Prix is our goal but if we got the chance to go to Verden, that would be a great extra." Footage of Rousseau's Topas and Simon on Youtube

Hassler Dressage reaches 2000th Facebook friend milestone!

We've been quietly awaiting the 2000th Facebook friend to appear and last night we hit that milestone. When we decided last month to celebrate this, we felt it best to keep it quiet and not advertise it. This would assure that no one would try to grab that spot simply to receive the prize. Did we just say "prize?" Yes, indeed, Laurie Lavins, our 2000th FB friend, will receive a super selection of goodies including an embroidered messenger bag, dvd, HD mug, and other treats for the body and spirit. As it turns out, Laurie was among the first to stay with us here at Riveredge in our Bay Rivers guest house in the summer of 2007. Congratulations Laurie! Three cheers to good friends!!!

Lingh's Future.

In January 2011 Karin and Offield Farms announces that Lingh will be standing in Germany for the 2011 Breeding Season. " I am thrilled to have made this decision for Lingh. He is turning out to be an excellent breeding stallion, producing quality foals that have the minds and character to become super sport horses. Youngsters by Lingh are showing lots of quality and ability for dressage and jumping. I have enough information now to say that they are easy for breeders and riders to handle, have terrific trainability, and show great work ethic - so similar to Lingh! Breeding to produce "a champion" takes teamwork and I'm satisfied that in co-operation with Gestut Birkhof in southern Germany, Lingh can influence the sporting world for years to come.   Meeting Thomas Casper and discovering his passion for breeding and his admiration of Lingh is the highlight of my year," Karin shares.

"Relocating to Germany offers a wonderful next platform for Lingh as a breeding stallion," adds Susanne Hassler of Hassler Dressage, Lingh's US agent and representative. "Through Gestut Birkhof, Lingh will more readily service the German mare base and hopefully extend his influence to mares in neighboring countries like France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. As one of the top stations in south Germany, Gestut Birkhof is the ideal home where he will receive individualized care and management while servicing mares from a reputable, established EU Station."  Lingh will soon travel from Sweden to Germany but will remain active in the Flyinge breeding program through shipped fresh cooled semen in addition to the frozen semen Flyinge has in storage.

"I am indebted to all at Flyinge for the wonderful care and management they provided Lingh over the past two and half years. Working with Karl-henrik Heimdahl, Flyinge's Breeding Director was an extraordinary experience for me; he certainly taught me a lot about breeding and Swedish sensibility. They helped me transition Lingh from his active performance career to his life as a breeding stallion. I will forever be thankful for the committed, detailed care he received by all the staff at Flyinge, especially Maths Ortbring, Lingh's groom.  I am excited to begin new friendships and to see Lingh have the opportunity to shine in the South. This move for Lingh is a celebration, a fulfillment of my vision for his influence to extend across many borders. I personally want to thank Susanne Hassler for her continued assistance. As a stallion owner I am inexperienced, but she has given me wings... Lingh and I are grateful. He shall have a very good home at Gestut Birkhof. " concludes Karin.

Harmony's Baroncelli Arrives at Riveredge.

baroncelliHappy, happy 2011! In the early days of the New Year, we enjoyed the long awaited homecoming of Harmony's Baroncelli to Riveredge! Owned in partnership with Hengststation Pape since 2004, Harmony's Baroncelli has been a great success story under Susan Pape, with top placings at the FEI World Championships for Young Horses through Germany's Developing Horse Championships (Nuernburger Burg Pokal) all the way up through international Grand Prix's. baroncelliLate in 2010, Leslie generously offered Susanne Hassler the opportunity to get back to the Grand Prix arena aboard this proven, wonderful, 12-year old stallion. Now fully owned by Silver Spur Operating Company/ Harmony Sporthorses, Baroncelli was recently released from quarantine at Rigbie Farm and has arrived at Riveredge fit, happy, and healthy! We thank Sharon Clark and her team at Rigbie Farm for their wonderful care of "Mr. B" during his required CEM-quarantine. With the recent passing of Ingo's father Gunter Pape, Leslie felt it was right to keep Mr. B in the family, promising him the best of care and every need met at Riveredge. He's a blessing to us all! Looking forward to a wonderful 2011 and all the excitement Baroncelli will bring to our year!

Lingh Glows at the Globe.

Bo Jenå is known for many things but many carry warm memories of his à la Celle showings with the Swedish stallion Maraton. Now we have travelled 20 years forward in time from that point and it takes more to woe a crowd. Bo Jenå stepped up to the challenge with Lingh on long rein and oh what a performance!lingh

The world reknown GrandPRix stallion, who had his first foal crop with shining honors this season in Sweden, still does the ballet on a very high level. To the cheer and rhythmical clapping from the crowd he showed himself with real freshness in movements and body, impressive after many years in sport. With feisty and elastic steps in elegant lateral work, managed by Bo Jenå from the ground, the glittering athlete danced to the sound of “In the mood”. When the music changed to “Simply the best” andLingh continued in passage the roar in the Globe increased – when the piaffe Came, the crowd was close to the boiling point.

Lingh showed proof of his electricity but Bo Jenå calmly guided him on and when “Life is Life” tuned in the whole arena clapped in sync to a very rhythmical piaffing stallion. No performance by hand is complete without extended trot, which is extremely demanding of the handler. And Lingh didn’t disappoint anyone – those who remember him from the World Cup finale with Edward Gal got a flashback of the force and elegance he moves with. Under immense cheer the duo of elegantes showed off and finished with the classical exit out of the arena. This is where we saw it first – but not for the last time. Lingh and Bo Jenå – already a classic.

FEI Junior/YR Clinic and Freestyle Challenge Fundraiser.

ridersThe 2-day clinic we conducted for the FEI JR/Young Riders of Region One last week fostered a high level of camaraderie and team spirit among the talented riders who came together here at Riveredge from NC, MD, VA, and NJ. We so enjoyed our time with all the riders, both in training and developing each pair during their sessions with Scott, and hosting them for evening meals and discussions at our home. Each of the riders are bright, melissa_witstertalented, inspired teenagers or young adults. It was particularly moving to watch them use the opportunity to grow to know one another better as people, each with their own individual dreams yet with similar challenges to conquer along the way. As we’ve always believed in“Building Relationships, Creating Community,” this JR/YR clinic has consistently proven to be a meaningful endeavor and we look forward to hosting the riders again in the future.

The FEI JR/YR Freestyle Challenge Fundraiser we conducted on Saturday night was hugely effective in furthering the spirit of “All for one, one for all.” We are very grateful to Brian O’Connor for taking time to join us and conducting the evening with his crowd-pleasing announcing. Rita Lowry’s generous donation of Bruster’s Ice Cream was a welcome treat for our guests as well! With the warm, muggy weather, we were particularly happy with our plan to limit the number of performances by quadrilleputting together a quadrille at the last minute! Big kudo’s to FEI JR riders Jordan Rich, Lauren Gibson,Kya Endreson, andAdriane Aldvord for rallying behind this idea and pulling off such a brilliant performance! FEI JR riders Kaitlin Blythe and Clare Green started with a dressage demonstration conducted by Brian O’Connor, which helped educate the crowd on the various dressage movements they would see in the freestyles and quadrilles. The Freestyle Challenge then began with Kaitlin and Clare’s freestyles, followed by FEI Young silent-auctionRiders Melissa Reese, Jillian Kemenosh, and Jessica Zoskey, who each performed their freestyles after the quadrille.Between the Freestyle Challenge, the raffle, and the Silent Auction, the evening’sfundraising activities were enormously successful. Our gratitude goes out to the many generous donors of outstanding items for the Silent Auction; from private individuals to professionals, many truly fantastic items and services were contributed, giving this Silent Auction a very special flair. We thank you each, one and all, and dearly appreciate your generosity.

It is our great pleasure to be helping the riders of Region One continue in their quest for the North American Junior Young Rider Championships, and establishing our Young Equestrian Scholarship Fund to help talented youths both now and in the future.

CDCTA Dressage at Morven Park May 1-2, 2010.

A fun group gathered at the CDCTA Dressage At Morven Park Show over the weekend of May 1 -2nd to enjoy good weather, great dressage, and time together. Our weekend and barn were filled with friends and fellow trainers including Kelly McGinn, Claudia Patrick, and JJ Tate. We celebrated their successes along with our own throughout the weekend. We were particularly excited to have our assistant trainer Ashley (Frechette) Madison join us aboard Harmony’s Locksley I and her own Rhinelander gelding Lugano. Locksley put in a beautiful debut performance at Third 1, showing off many of his highlights especially his elastic and expressive movement and unyielding tempo. Ashley also made her first PSG debut with Lugano. She had a great experience in both arenas. Our student Melissa Ortolano joined us aboard her longtime mount Libretto and enjoyed a very positive show experience. Our daughter Sara Hassler made her debut at First level with Playing for Keeps along with terrific rides at Training level. Sara earned 68.667% at First level and finished as the High Score Junior/YR of the entire show. Susanne also had a super weekend with Harmony’s Davidoff Hit. The pair had their best performance at Fourth level to date, earning a 69.767% in Test One and finished as High Score Fourth Level Champion for the weekend. A fun first: a mother - daughter high score championship weekend!

Hassler Dressage Partners with Barnby Notes.
—a message from Susanne Hassler

With our focus on excellence in training, Scott and I are proud to announce our partnership with Barnby Notes, a company that has brilliantly introduced to the equestrian community the concept of online training notebooks designed exclusively for the serious and mindful equestrian. barnbynotes

In line with our training philosophies, Barnby Notes brings to the forefront the importance of writing down notes before and after lessons, writing down training and show goals, and coupling reflection with in-depth journaling for those deeper, more meaningful connections we are all striving for as mindful students of dressage. As the founder of Barnby Notes, Allison Brunelli writes, "It is proven that if we don't write down and later practice what we see and hear and experience, then we can lose far too much it (ninety percent) -- and it is far too valuable to lose! But if we do, the writing process has a powerful way of helping us grow our talents."

I am now making regular entries in a Hassler Dressage's Open Notebook at Barnby Notes to publicly demonstrate the beauty of discovery and memory retention that each notebook entry can bring to each of us as individuals and as a group under the gables of Hassler Dressage. These entries will keep you connected to my innermost training thoughts on a regular basis.

Barnby Notes offers a free two-week trial to their service at www.barnbynotes.com. You may also join the Barnby Notes mailing list once on their site. Check out this unique and innovative service today!

VADA/Nova Spring Dressage Show.

The VADA/NOVA Spring Dressage Show at Morven Park April 10 &11 was a crisp but thankfully dry weekend. Hassler Dressage had a fun crew of six horses and many students in attendance. davidoff hit and susanne hasslerThe show was a qualifier for the NAYRC as well as an FEI Young Horse and Brentina Cup qualifier which max’ed entries and stabling for a very successful show. Scott’s students from NY, OH, and surrounding states were all in attendance bringing some fun and camaraderie to the event for us all. Saturday evening over 30 of us gathered for dinner at a local restaurant, making it feel more like a family reunion than a horse show! Our FEI Young Riders Jill Kemenosh and Jessica Zoskey had another successful qualifier: Jill set the standard and won the Team test with a 66.97%, just ahead of our friend and student Meagan Davis who has had lots of success aboard her mount Bentley. Jessica came in 3rd with a clean and elegant test. In the Individual test the next day, Meagan won with a 67.1% while Jill and Nelzon produced another beautiful ride, finishing with a close 2nd. Jessica took 4th with another reliably keepersteady test, our ‘steady Eddies!’ Our friend Susie Granville and her elegant Rodnick made their debut together at Prix St. Georges placing 3rd; it was a joy to watch them go down centerline for the first time and to encourage their growth together as a team. Our daughter Sara did a good job with her partner Keeper rivoli(Playing for Keeps) and placed 3rd in a Training Level Test 3 ride. Harmony’s Davidoff Hit settled in for the weekend and had another winning show with a 1st and 2nd place at 4th Level. Karen Day’s Rivoli showed notable improvement from the first show, with two really nice winning performances at 3rd Level. Rivoli truly loves to compete and seemed to live each day with more purpose after our first show of the year in Williamston, NC. He won Third Level Test 3 with a 69.535% and Third Level Test 2 with a 69.744%, earning High Score Third Level for this show. The judges love him and so do we! We’re looking forward to the next show at Morven Park over Derby weekend…it will be our 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Barn Aisle party! Please join us!

Day of Prayer for Courtney King-Dye announced, March 14.

CourtneyFollowing her fall with a horse on March 3, Courtney King-Dye remains in a coma. While we all have included her in our prayers since that accident, and will continue to do so in the days and weeks ahead, let's join together for a day of prayer for our friend Courtney, this Sunday March 14. We want to strengthen all of the prayers going out for her, by coming together in a unified voice. If you can, please consider contributing to this collective prayer by doing one or more of the following on Sunday, March 14: light a long-lasting candle; reflect during several minutes of silence; find a quiet moment with a beloved horse and together send healing energy; fast for the day; find your own unique way to send your prayer. One or more of these actions, done with a collective spirit will surely have some positive effect for our friend; what you can contribute to this collective prayer will make a difference. Thank you, and please spread the word to all individuals and groups you know who might like to know of this. Please also read on Dressage Daily about the fundraiser for Courtney in Wellington, Wednesday March 10.

Training with Debbie McDonald, important clinic update.

While our Training With Debbie McDonald clinic was scheduled for April 24th and 25th, unfortunately the need has arisen to reschedule the dates. Debbie’s assistant Adrienne Lyle, has had tremendous recent successes at the West Coast CDIs. Because of this, she will go to Europe to gain additional experience with the hopes of qualifying for the WEG selections. Debbie will have to accompany Adrienne to Europe this April and May. We share Debbie's excitement for Adrienne and are happy to support them in all ways; we hope to see Adrienne make it to the World Equestrian Games this October! We are also grateful that Debbie has worked with us to reschedule the clinic. The dates are now confirmed for the weekend of December 4th and 5th.

We are looking forward to hosting to a warm and exciting holiday season clinic at the beautiful new facility at Riveredge, and hope this does not cause undue inconvenience for those of you who have already signed up to join us. If these dates will not work for you, we understand and will be glad to refund your early registration payment. (We need to hear from you before April 1, 2010, or we will assume you will keep your seat in December.) If you're unsure if you will be able to make the clinic in December but would like to hold on to your spot, consider leaving your reservation intact; you can always transfer or give your seat/ticket to a friend, making it a great holiday gift! Remember, if you choose to have your payment refunded, please let us know no later than April 1, 2010.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but we are very pleased to offer this fantastic educational event at the later date. We look forward to hearing from you! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
